The Best Nest is a children's book by P. D. Eastman. It was written in 1968.
Mr. and Mrs. Bird live in a nest in a birdhouse. Mr. Bird is so happy he has to sing, and this is his song:
"I love my house, I love my nest, in all the world my nest is best!"Mrs. Bird doesn't like their old nest and decides that she and Mr. Bird have to find a place to build a new nest. So, the birds leave their old house and find a new place. They come to a tree. They want to move in, but a raccoon is already they. The birds then come to a boot. They think it's a nice house but they're wrong; it belongs to a foot.
Next, they go to a mailbox, but the mailman has mail to deliver. Finally, they come to a church. Mrs. Bird sees that the bell area is so big it's perfect to build a new nest. So they build a nest with some hay, soda straws and broom straws, sweater string and stocking string, mattress stuffing, horse hair and man hair.
Mrs. Bird claims that this the best nest yet and wants to live here forever. So, Mr. Birds becomes happy and sings:
"I love our house, I love our nest, in all the world our nest is best!"He's so busy singing he doesn't even see a man named Mr. Parker coming. Every day at 12 o'clock, Mr. Parker comes to the church and pulls the rope to ring the bell. Mrs. Bird escapes out of the bell area quickly. Then when Mr. Bird comes back in, he sees that the ringing bell leaves the nest demolished. Where is Mrs. Bird?
Mr. Bird looks everywhere for Mrs. Bird. When he sees a cat, he sees there are some brown feathers next to him, he gets so sad, thinking the cat ate Mrs. Bird. Mr. Bird is worried he'll never see Mrs. Bird again. It then begins to rain. Mr. Bird can't see where he's going. Then he bumps into something. It's his old house. Mr. Bird decides to go in their until it stops raining. However, he's surprised to see Mrs. Bird singing:
"I love my house, I love my nest, in all the world this nest is best!"Shocked, Mr. Bird assumes she previously hated the old nest. Mrs. Bird tells him a mother bird can change her mind, and there's no nest like an old nest for a brand new bird. And at that moment, the new bird is born.
